What happened to the American Legion on Clinton St? We use to go there for some great Spaghetti Dinners and fundraisers.

When I first saw this post, I thought I had remembered seeing that the site was for sale at some point, but doing a search brought nothing...then today, I saw this:

The owners of a popular pub in Binghamton's First Ward are preparing to acquire a neighboring American Legion building.

The operators of the Old Union Hotel are negotiating to buy the Legion Post 1254 property at the corner of Clinton and Grace streets.

The building is directly across the street from the Old Union's three-story structure, which was remodeled after it was acquired by the current owners in 2012.

The Old Union Hotel owners hope to utilize the American Legion building for catering. Under the current plans, the American Legion would still be able to utilize the first floor after the ownership change.

The Legion building has been idle for several months. The structure needs a new roof and other extensive repair work.

The sale of the property is expected to be finalized within the next month or two. The Legion site could be used to provide more parking spaces for Old Union patrons. The business recently acquired more property to the west of the building for added parking.

Thank you Honey for the information. I wonder whats happening to some of the American Legions- that's a stupid question. Vets are dying off and the younger Vets may not want to continue meeting at Legion buildings that are too large for the dwindling membership. I know on upper Court Street a smaller VA moved into the dwelling there that use to be a small club of some kind. It's located not far from the empty Niko's Restaurant going toward Kirkwood.  Well I am sorry to see the Clinton and Grace Street VA sold but hope the Union will utilize the property. It's like another landmark gone from our area. It's sad to see Clinton St change. We were talking about Philly Sales the other day and how much we miss the smell of their popcorn. The Times sure are a Changing. Again.thank you for your research and information you found. I appreciate it.

I know, it's sad the things we've had around forever, and taken for granted, are disappearing. .

The one that moved to Upper Court went into the old Schnitzelbank, I think...not sure where it moved from or why?

The story does say that the Legion would be able to utilize the 1st floor, if needed.

The VFW on Upper Court St used to be downtown on Carroll St across from the Sons of Italy. They moved to Court St after the fire.

Been to this VFW. While the patrons have been great to chat with, the "Commander" is arrogant and not too friendly. When asked what was needed to join... it was like I was bothering him.... but who am I but a retired military guy... Also, there was a bartender who would only talk nonstop about her ex, her boyfriend, and about her son. .... the story line got old after about the 5th visit. But the drinks were cheap!
