Seriously sick and tired of hearing about heroin by the county exec, D.A. and senator. I do not want public resources being used to "fix" or "heal" or "save" people for whom life is so tough they can't make it through the day without sticking a needle in their arm. I don't want to seem unsympathetic or unduly cold, but unless someone held these people down and involuntarily introduced them to heroin and they became addicted against their own will, it was a CHOICE they made to knowingly inject themselves with a substance they knew was - at the very least highly addictive and illegal - and at most fatal. Sick of politicians making this their pet project or their main cause. How about jobs? How about infrastructure improvements? How about lowering taxes? If I had known these guys would be focusing all their attention on the weakest of our species and holding daily press conferences calling for using public funds to help drug addicts, I would NEVER have cast my vote for them. I don't believe this is even near the top of the list of most Broome County residents' concerns.

The most any politician can do about anything is pass a law. The stuff has already been illegal forever. Notice how none of them ever mention anything specific as far as what they plan on doing about the problem? It's all a play on the emotions of the public in order to get votes. It's working very well. It got Fred elected and now Jason too.

Install new programs or addicts! Give them food clothing and shelter then you can become the dumping grounds for every addict in the Country! Or at least the state. You think you pay high taxes now! The Garner and the rest of the idiots can sail off into the sunset leaving the bills to you.

I am concerned about the Public Health Alert for heroin.

Is there an immunization shot I can get?  Should I wear a mask/filter in public?  Use alcohol lotion?

How do I prevent myself from catching heroin?

Politicians, like underwear, should be changed frequently.  And for the same reasons.

The OP is 100% dead on........................................

Nobody wants to take personal responsibility for their actions. Particularly when it comes to illegal drugs.

But if anyone EVER says anything to that effect, you are immediately chastised .....................No matter how true it is. AND IT IS!

These people think that throwing money at the problem will make it all go away.................................Dream on!!

Garnar made it quite clear he was focusing on it, so if anyone voted for him, and is surprised now, well...

Welcome home.

The primary function of the independent juror, is not as many think, to despense punishment to fellow citizens accused of breaking various laws, but rather to protect fellow citizens from tyrannical abuses of power by government.

The Constitution guarantees you the right to trial by jury. This means that government must bring its case before a jury of The People if government wants to deprive any person of life, liberty or property. Jurors can say no to government tyranny by refusing to convict.

I think you meant to say "for" before addicts so I fixed that.  I have to confess.  There was a period as I was thinking through all of this hype when I actually thought maybe it was worth some tax dollars going to rehab.  I guess I was trying to make sure my core philosophies of decriminalization and drug transactions are free market exchanges between people, weren't too pragmatic.  Was there something I was missing kind of thought.  But you are right.  Personal choices are not public money problems.

Parm correct me if I'm wrong, you have/had a kid with addiction?  It might sound cold but I think what this post boils down to is what is the justification for taking my money to fix that problem?  I feel the same way about people who do not have kids regarding school taxes.  Why is money from people, who do not have kids, taken away to pay for schools?  It really is the same thing.

Curing opiate addictions is easier, on paper, than bringing in new businesses. Why? Because they want to spend more of your money - not less. If it ain't pills, it's booze. If not booze then porn or gambling. There's always the next war to fight.

So these people should just be left to die?  I don't agree with that. As far as I can tell DA Cornwell has spent no local tax dollars on this.  This story says he sends drug users out of the area for rehab.  http://www.wicz.com/...ealth-emergency

But I agree the others are just throwing money at the problem, with no plan.

What's the percentages of addicts put through the system that fall back into addiction? Open the doors for treatment I agree with that but some safe guards need to be put in place so you don't get flooded with addicts from other areas. You will end up paying for everyone outside the area. Kind of like the welfare system.

Every addict I know has been to rehab multiple times.  Some as many as 5.
