In two weeks M-E will introduce their 50 greatest football players to celebrate 50 years of football at the school. I'm not sure how those players were selected. I have watched M-E football for all of those years and certainly have my own personal favorites. I am hoping for POSITIVE responses to this topic and hope that the M-E fans, former players and coaches will respond and list their favorites for selection. Let's see how close we can come to the actual team that is selected. Again, please keep it positive and realistic.

As a former Spartan (70's) I would have to say Mark French, Joe McKee, Ken Zunic, Rich Abrams, Keven Loveland from '74, Dennis Breckner ('72), Gary Breckner ('77?), plus a few from the late 90's team - Carney, Freiser, Herman.

I forgot one great one from '70 - Jeff Sammon

A biased pick from a Twist Run Road resident: Jeff Hess, Ken Yacavoni, Chuck and Steve Joslin and Rick Warren. A lot of greats to pick from!

So its just the 70's or the 90's ? Did you do miss a few good years of football or what? Sounds like it would be the years you played then the years your kid(s) played. Lots of great players came through before and after also.

I wasn't told this was a test.........I put in the names I feel should be considered for the top 50 players. If you think about it we're talking about an average of 1 player per year so it's going to be tough to limit the list to 50 (plus no one knows the method, if any, that is being used). The guys I went to school with, class of '74, were very good players - French went to Penn State (although it didn't work out too well for him), Zunic went to Villanova, and Dennis Breckner went to Miami and then got drafted. I believe all the others played beyond their ME days.

The 90's guys were also very good also, having lost in the state semis in the waning minutes.

The 70's and 90's had some very good teams with some very good players. I'm sure there are many others from other years - if you can name any, have at it.

By the way I did not play football and my kids did not attend ME or play football.

How about Hasegawa from the undefeated 72 team (Class of 73) ? A workhorse back on a great team from this area's strongest decade on the gridiron (IMO) : Vestal / UE / Ithaca / ME - Large schools, plus SV - North (STAC) & CF - Windsor (SUS) - Smaller schools. All had great programs in that decade.

Enrollments were at a high point. Any all-time Top 50 player lists should maybe include a few extar from that era - again IMO.

Many players from the 2004 state title team must be included. Can't be a better QB than Shane Connoly, especially in M-E's history?? Meta, Wright, Amorese, and Rice to name just a few.

please keep this positive. Naturally responders are going to remember the greats they played with and went to school with. Because people move out of the area not everyone has followed M-E football for all 50 years so their selections will not include all years.

John Massis '66 was a great tight end who went on to play at Syracuse.

I believe Marl Perkins '65 at one time held the NCAA single game carries record.

RIP to Craig Swagler '68 who gave his life in Viet Nam.

French was the BEST QB in M-E history (no doubt) but he had Kevin Loveland to catch his passes. Don't forget Loveland.

Can't think of this black dudes name..., Bobby---------? He went to school about the same time Breckner(Miami-Bears) played. In fact he got in trouble with Breckner and another guy which cost him a season. Then I think he pulled a gun on someone. He was a great football player ( D-1 material) and a great possible D-1 basketball player. He also ran track. I think he's a whino now. Too bad.., he was great-the best at that school.

Bob Colvin - He passed on a few years ago. He was great at everything in sports but unfortunately made some bad decisions. Very friendly to others.

Colvin played just one year before he was whisked off to jail. I would hope you could come up with 50 guys better then him. Vestals top 50 would make your list look like pee wee.
