A New York City resident has tested positive for the virus that causes monkeypox, state health officials announced late Friday. Health officials in Massachusetts confirmed its first case of monkeypox on May 18. The World Health Organization has identified about 80 cases globally.

The virus originates in primates and other wild animals, and causes fever, body aches, chills and fatigue in most patients. People with severe cases can develop rash and lesions on the face, hands and other parts of the body.

Monkeypox is a viral disease that occurs mostly in central and western Africa. It is called monkeypox because it was first identified in laboratory monkeys.

How Does a Person Get Monkeypox?

According to the CDC, "Transmission of monkeypox virus occurs when a person comes into contact with the virus from an animal, human, or materials contaminated with the virus." Basically what that means is that the virus can enter your body through your eyes, nose, or mouth - in other words, in order to get it super close contact or the sharing of bodily fluid is necessary.

WHO: Monkeypox Outbreak a Global Health Emergency

WHO's assessment is that the risk of monkeypox is moderate globally and in all regions, except in the European region where the risk is high. Monkeypox has affected over 15,800 people in 72 countries, according to a tally by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) published on July 20. There are 2,592 US cases.

The first symptoms of monkeypox are fever, headaches, muscle pain and back pain during the course of five days. Rashes subsequently appear on the face, the palms of hands and soles of feet, followed by lesions, spots and finally scabs.

CDC confirms first U.S. cases of monkeypox in children

Why it matters: The CDC has said children, especially those under 8 years old, are among those at "especially increased risk" for severe monkeypox disease.

What she's saying: "Both of those children are traced back to individuals who come from the men-who-have-sex-with-men community, the gay men's community," Walensky said at a virtual event with the Washington Post on Friday.

According to NPR, there are now nearly 21,894 confirmed cases of monkeypox in the U.S. and those numbers are growing. The good news is, unlike COVID-19, 99% of infected people are expected to survive.

Dr. Anthony Fauci says that monkeypox is a threat to several groups of people, including pregnant women and children.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, monkeypox spreads through direct contact with the infectious rash it causes, as well as through prolonged face-to-face contact, contact with contaminated objects, and contact with infected animals. Pregnant women can also spread the virus to their fetus.

Spain reports 2nd death from monkeypox

The ministry based in Madrid said both fatalities were young men. It reported its first death on Friday, the same day that Brazil also reported its first death from monkeypox.

"We know that although the disease is self-limiting in most cases, monkeypox can cause severe complications,” said Catherine Smallwood, Senior Emergency Officer at WHO Europe.

And what is NY state health commissioner, Mary Basset's biggest priority? Changing the name of Monkey Pox to something else.

Here's a thought or two...number one you start cracking down on infection control. This state is a joke. Medical staff with 3 inch nails, hair all over the place, jewelry, piercings. I can't even imagine how many pathogens these people are carrying around.

Two...maybe call up President Biden, ask him to send the Mercy and Hope ships and isolate these people before it spreads all over the damn state?

This isn't rocket science.  It's basic nursing. She needs to do her job, the job Zucker refused to do.

Officials say the first monkeypox case in a Broome County resident has been identified.

Although monkeypox vaccines have been available in New York City and on a limited basis elsewhere in the state, no vaccinations are being offered in Broome County.

Infections usually last between two and four weeks.

I notice no demographic details were given. Of course. Who is going to admit to having contact? Once again, the Department of Health fails to properly share information so the community can protect itself. FAIL!

I don't suppose they've set up a safe free place for exposed patients to isolate. So freaking useless. IT'S NOT ROCKET SCIENCE, DO YOUR JOB!

Los Angeles County officials said this week that they were investigating the death of a person who had been diagnosed with monkeypox to see if the illness was a contributing cause of death.

It is the second known death of a person diagnosed with the disease in the United States, which has reported more cases of the viral illness this year than anywhere in the world.

  • thomas changed the title to Mpox Declared Health Emergency Second Time

Earlier this week, for the second time since 2022, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared Mpox a global public health emergency.

Health officials confirmed that Mpox has spread from Africa to Europe.

This Mpox variant is said to be more infectious and stronger than the 2022 strain. This worries the New York State Department Of Health.
